Castle of Diósgyőr
Modern connection technologies such as RAPID® SSF and RAPID® FT are being used for the roof structure in the current renovation of Diósgyőr Castle. The historic complex is being reconstructed with great care and developed into a major tourist centre. Diósgyőr Castle, near Miskolc, was the favourite residence of King Louis the Great in the 14th century and, with its four-towered Gothic complex, ranks among Hungary’s most significant medieval structures. After a long period of neglect, it remained in ruins until restoration work began in 1962, with the first sections being restored since 2014.
Extensive modernisation
A new, large-scale renovation project has been underway since February 2021 as part of the Hungarian ‘Modern Cities’ programme. Both the interior and the outdoor facilities are being completely refurbished. The budget stands at around 12.7 billion forint (around 35 million euros), and the aim is to develop the site into one of Central Europe’s most important tourist attractions. The reopening to visitors is planned for the second half of 2026.
- Inside, new rooms are being created across an area of around 3,900 m²
- Towers, vaults and courtyards are being reconstructed or rebuilt
- Both the inner and outer castles are being developed in parallel
The reconstruction of historic buildings requires more than simply replicating existing structures faithfully. The renovation of Diósgyőr Castle in Hungary brings together centuries-old architectural traditions and modern joining techniques.
