House of Bread (Haus des Brotes)
Opposites form this extraordinary construction
The House of Bread project is characterised using different contrasts. Materials such as wood and stainless steel were used, and the appearance is characterised by edges and flowing elements.

The development path
The architects behind the architectural planning are Coop Himmelb(l)au and Wolf D. Prix & Partner ZT GmbH. This project was commissioned by the company Backaldrin. The building is planned as an event forum and for exhibitions on the subject of bread. When visiting the exhibition rooms, the visitor is immersed in the world of bread and encounters art and cultural artefacts from 9,000 years ago, as well as the origins and history of bread around the world.
The path from the planning of such a building to its completion can take a long time - especially if it has never been realised in this form before. The House of Bread or Paneum was the first free-form timber construction in 2016 and therefore required meticulous planning and lead time. The interlocking timber components were prefabricated with millimetre precision using 3D software to enable the building to be constructed smoothly and quickly. Thanks to the CLT timber elements, the interior of the building shines in natural wood. The exterior façade is made of stainless steel shingles. The base of the building is made of reinforced concrete. A total of 88 layers of self-supporting CLT panels were used for the structure.

The House of Bread is not just about bread, but also about the possibilities of using wood in architectural buildings and the underlying expertise in structural engineering. A total of 60,000 Schmid screws were used in this highly demanding project.
